I have been designing and decorating spaces for over 20 years, beginning when I lived in Manhattan. I called myself the Professional Neat Freak, and initially began cleaning the apartments of local bachelors. Quite honestly, they just loved that I changed their sheets once a week; but they started to notice me moving things around while I cleaned under couches and tables... hence, the beginning of my interior design business! I love helping people change the look of things without spending a ton of money; I call this process "refresh and renew" as a way of opening up my client’s eyes to scale and placement. This is something I still practice and believe in with every project I start.
In the past decade, my career has gone in all sorts of directions anywhere from custom builds to redecorating to gutting and renovating. Keeping on track, staying on budget, and being creative are all important keys to design. Design, decorating and style are all about what the clients like and see, my job is to make their vision a reality.
I use Pinterest (see link below) and set up a "vision board" for each client. Vision boards help organize my design ideas and are accessible to client's for sharing inspiration. This process is a useful tool because it helps you connect to what you like and don't like, along with where your comfort level lies and what your budget will allow.
Last but certainly not least, I am a wife and mother of 4 amazing children. In addition to the 6 of us, we are also proud owners of 2 rescue dogs, Gus and Beauregard. I am a very lucky person to have a very supportive husband and family and to follow my passion.
"Some people look for beautiful places, others make places beautiful."
It all starts with a conversation! We schedule a meeting so I can see your space, I listen to your thoughts and visions to get an impression of YOUR style and understand your budget.
From our Consultation I create an initial/flexible design plan. We then move forward working together on layouts and finishes
Once our final design is determined I will source all the trades and services required. Together visit vendors, make selections, create a schedule and manage the entire installation.
We gutted and renovated this gorgeous historical home in the city of Rochester, NY.
Jyl was fantastic! She came in, listened, looked at how we could use what we had in a more appealing, cost-effective manner, and shared her thoughts about our long-term planning changes for our home. I couldn't have asked for a better experience!
My experience working with Jyl was absolutely outstanding! Jyl took time to really understand my project and my personal style. I felt truly comfortable from our first meeting through the end of the process . Through superior design skills and impeccable style, Jyl brought my room to life. I have already recommended Home Styling by Jyl to 2 of my friends and they were equally as pleased with their experience as well as the results!!!!!!
Furnishing and decorating a new home can be absolutely overwhelming! Jyl listened to my thoughts and then provided ideas for furniture, decorating and paint colors to fit with my thoughts and our family's lifestyle. What was overwhelming to me was second nature to Jyl! She went shopping with me for furniture while additionally utilizing so many pieces I previously owned. Her knack for color and design, flowing from room to room, is incredible! Jyl's attention to detail in style and design allowed each room to feel cozy, comfortable, and complete. She is an absolute pleasure to work with, and her energy and passion for what she does comes through the moment you meet her!
After making the decision to build a new home, we decided to take long drives, through multiple neighborhoods, to check out the various home color schemes. There were many homes that impressed us with their choices, while there were quite a few that drove us to ask ourselves" What were they thinking???". One of our theories: Making color decisions by placing small color samples together in a paint store doesn't always translate on a larger scale into what you imagined. Unfortunately, the result can be an expensive disappointment. We knew what we wanted, but didn't have the expertise to know the ramifications of our choices, so we decided to get some help. Building a new house is a marathon of making decisions. One of our smartest decisions was to hire Jyl Hoffend. She took the time to learn our vision for our new house. Jyl told us what would work, and what wouldn't work. She was on our team, and frequently our coach. Jyl joined us in our visits to showrooms, and participated in discussions with retailers. She earned our trust and respect. The result is the house that we wanted, both inside and out. A house that has a "Wow!" factor without the wow price. Jyl Hoffend is a consummate professional with wide-ranging expertise and outstanding interpersonal skills. She truly is an artist. Building a home is one of the most significant investments of one's life. I suggest ensuring that your investment turns out the way you envision it by adding Jyl Hoffend to your team. We did, and it was one of the best investments that we have ever made.
Jyl was able to quickly understand my style and color preferences, able to work within a very slim budget, and she beautifully redesigned my living room with nickels and dimes! She also provided color guidance throughout the rest of the downstairs, resulting in a complete transformation! She is talented, fast, money-smart and lovely to work with!
Jyl helped me with some decorating in my great room, dining room, kitchen and foyer. She has a beautiful eye and really helped me to pull things together. She's very easy to work with and is also good at working within your budget. Jyl has a great vision for decorating and is a pleasure to work with. I will definitely use her again on my next project.
